The
artist: Gaëtan Gauvin was born in 1950, in Québec City, the province of
Québec in Canada. He completed his bachelor in Graphic arts at Laval
University, Québec, in 1973. In his early years he worked as a graphic
artist for TV and gave classes at the conservatory of Dramatic Arts in stage
design. Soon his talent attracted the fashion medias where he excelled as an
illustrator and creative director in visual presentation for retails stores
such as Eaton’s Canada, adding his personal touch to fashion supplement for
newspapers and magazines such as LaGazette and more. His flamboyant style
was adopted by the couture house like Lily Simons in Montréal where he would
performed live paintings in vitrine, LaCoupe Hair Salon where his paintings
adorned the head office on Madison Ave New York, major collection of huge
wall paintings were ordered by the Delata Hotel in Montréal. We must admit
that Gaëtan Gauvin has a flourishing and diverse career. His life took a new
orientation as a teacher in fashion illustration for LaSalle College Canada,
an international fashion school. This venture brought the artist in exotic
parts of the world such as Singapore, Asia. This special lifestyle exposed
him to different cultures that influenced his art. A collection of paintings
were requested to decorate the Maison du Québec in Singapore. A huge wall
murale now ornates the Fashion floor at LaSalle head office in Montréal. His
lastest discovery was Turkey. Istanbul had a complete charm over him. This
is where he settled and creates since 1997. Gauvin finds his inspiration in
various periods of art’s history. He stays fascinated by it’s rich mixture
of cultures and the generous hospitality of it’s people. For his exhibition
Gauvin favors the Sultan’s Palaces, in harmony with the general theme of his
collection: “Pek Eski Czamanlardi” – “Once upon a Time”. With a personal and
unique blend of mediums and techniques, he transcends ancient artworks with
a sublime interpretation.
